We all know that building work in general is much cheaper here then in the Uk, but I am often asked to arrange for small jobs to be done and what are the costs?
As any where else the cost of living has gone up and so have daily labour costs, this is also due to the lack of work.
As a rough guide this year, using sub contractors, I am paying about 50lira a day for unskilled, 75 for semiskilled and 100 for skilled. This is all plus food, drink, cigs and materials. I also have to do all the running around getting supplies etc.
Over the years I have got to know the good workers from the bad and because I am known to pay cash when the job is done, with subs in between if its a long job, I can get who I want when I want no matter what they are doing.
At the moment I am doing a winter room extension to a village house, this involves moving all the kitchen around, taking 1 wall down and replacing with a patio sliding door, installing 2 angled end walls with doors and windows and a front wall of windows and patio sliding door, a total space of 14sq.m. The roof is already in situ but all the electrics have to be moved. This is all being done in double glazing and insulated upvc and will make a completely new room. Cost about 6,000 lira. I have costed the same work in the Uk and it came to ?12,000.
