yeah, and you pay all that, and what do they do for you?

at least here in britain we know OUR council tax is being spent wisely on focus groups to tell us that we WANT our rubbish to be collected fortnightly, and that we WANT to be fined if we happen to put a put a bit of paper in the vegetable matter bin, instead of the dedicated paper one.
we actually ENJOY seeing local councillors getting more in expenses than some MPs with second homes on the moon.
they tell us that we have actually ASKED for less police presence and more cctv, and that we all welcome the councils efforts in printing council information in EVERY language except english.
we voted for smaller markets and large "entertainment areas" in the market place, apparently.(that one just concerns northampton, pet peeve of mine)
and all this for an average of ?1400 per annum.
now, you tell me what the dalyan lot will do for 29.50 lira?
will they stop collecting refuse every day?
will they force local children to embrace other faiths?
will they go out of their way to make it easy for foreigners but not locals to understand their various edicts and services?
no?
i thought not.
makes you wonder what you pay for sometimes, dont it?

I do have to walk 50metres to get to the daily bins as the one outside only gets emptied once a week!!
We get a public announcement system, street lights, street cleaners, council gardeners and those nice men in the police like uniforms, Zabita, who have the functions of traffic control, parking and weights and measures. Also quite useful to have a cup of tea with and find out the local gossip. What else do you need?

Actually the bin tax is in the water bill but still it is only about 10 lira a year, well for me it is because officialy my bins only get emptied once a week, which is why most of us walk to one of the daily bins.

By the way we have asked the new mayor about recycling etc, there is supposed to be a system in place but how it works is anybodys guess.

50 metres? its an outrage! good job the daily mail doesnt know how they are treating you.
you could probably get a grant for that if you lived in a london borough.

I think to get a grant in a London borough you need to be Gay, single parent, ethnic minority or preferably all three.

I sometimes think that Brits are an ethnic minority in their own country, just not recognised as such. Yet another reason to add to the very long list of why do Brits leave the UK. This is an observation and not meant to get peoples backs up, it probably depends on where you live, as to how you feel.

i dont think it is JUST where you live in britain that makes you feel like that, the whole thrust from central govt seems to be away from britishness and more towards a wishy washy mish mash of every other cultural and ethnic minority that settles in this country.
now, being third generation italian immigrant on one side i am not knocking the fact that immigrants are welcomed and allowed to settle, what i do object to is the authorities bending over and letting these immigrants dictate what happens here. to my mind, if you want to settle in a country you should assimiliate to their way of life, and not try to make them accept your traditions and rituals and beliefs, if you want to live exactly as you did at home, then you should stay there.
the argument from some is that it is unsafe for them in their homeland, sad but true for many, however the important distinction is that britain is NOT their homeland, with all their traditions, rituals and beliefs, and that is why it is safe for them, they should accept that and move on with their lives in the ways of whichever country they settle in.
sorry to get a little political, but in a more trivial way it is very like those people that go to "exotic" locations, (majorca, benidorm, marmaris etc) and then complain all the time about the weather, "i like it hot, but this is too hot", the food, "you cant get a decent curry anywhere, and trying to get mashed potato is like asking for a unicorn saddle", and the language "hardly any of them spoke good english, you would expect that, in a tourist area, that little guy at the restaurant could speak about three words of english, but he managed to speak to all the dutch/german/russian/french/etc as if he was a native though, they all hate the english out here you know!"
if these type of people want everything to be like it is back home, they should go to skegness or blackpool, and pay three times as much for everything they eat and drink, but at least its english

anyhow, rant over, and only 138 days to go

err, you CAN get the full english breakfast there cant you? have to start my day with a full english, otherwise its not a holiday!!!

Of course you can get a full english, you can go to Marmaris!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only joking, some of the restaurants do advertise this menu option, but I would rather have a good menemen. Not many places have it on the menu but will rustle one up if you ask.

My mum was from Naples by the way so I have Italian blood coursing through my veins.

Yes many places do a passable English breakfast at a reasonable price. I hate to admit it but I was the first to offer proper English breakfast in Dalyan, the only reason being that many English people don't have time for breakfast at home and probably only have it on holiday. Now of course everyone else has copied.
John, did you know the reason almost any Turkish man can cook Menemen if nothing else, is because traditionally their mothers teach them this one dish before going to University or National Service so that they don't starve.

Well I didn't know that, but I suppose there is Menemen and there is Menemen, the best one we have had so far was on he way back from Mugla just after you come down the big hill onto the long straight there is a place set back from the road, it was really good.

There is a small pancake place up river from Dalyan past where the camels used to be that does a good one as well.

I like an Imam Bayildi as well.

Although they grow like mad here, both Sandra and I are allergic to peppers and not that keen on auburgine, I like a little in an oven baked guvec but that is about it.
The place you are talking about, would it be YORUK ALI'S ? Most of the food there is great and we often stop on the way back from Mugla or Marmaris.
Yes there are many different versions of Menemen, as the ingredients can change as to what is available but the most basic version seems to be eggs scrambled with onion and tomato fried in olive oil or butter, you can put anything you like in. Its a one pan meal. I can't stand it as I am also allergic to eggs, but I have no trouble cooking with them for other people.

As this has all got a bit off subject! I forgot to mention that those living in a village such as Kemaliye and Okcular do not pay any council rates as they are not in the Belediye but you still get your bins emptied and street lights and in some parts you have even got paved roads.

Hi Steve,
Our property is in Ockcular. We dont have a paved road or even the red crushed brick, if that is what its called and have to walk approx 200 meters to put our rubbish in a 40 gallon drum .We have paid our Council Tax since 2004 since we got our Tapu and Living Permit.

Regards Julie

I did say some parts, I also think you now have the big galvanised metal bins on the main road. Who do you pay council tax to?

I stand corrected and no I didn't know that. I was under the impression that villages did not pay emlak vergi and was part of the reason some of them were objecting to going into the Belediye. Just goes to prove I am not infallable, but I think I have said that somewhere else.

By the way do you like my new avatar, it reminded me of the robot used in the Arcelik adverts.
