    Default The main Square Dalyan

Well you may know that the square has been dug up, it has been re laid with various textures of brick and granite etc, flower beds have been planted and at night there are lights shining through blocks of crystal, which are quite hidden during the day, unless you know what to look for.
Verdict, I think a success, it does look very smart and yet unobtrusive. We are now waiting to see what happens cover wise in front of the restaurants.
Another bit of good news, the big old tree in the middle by the tea garden has been seen by a specialist, it has been operated on and water and ventilation shafts to the roots have been instaled. We wish it a speady recovery and an even longer and shady life.

Nokta Supermarket in the centre has gone and in its place a refurbished Sevikoglu Supermarket has sprung up with wide ailses and good stocks as well as good prices. We think the owner of Nokta is buiding next to Sercan(Beko and Aygas) but not sure what it will be, hopefully not more empty shops, which will be an even more noticeable fact this coming year. The rents are realy too high for the potential income of any shop, bar or restaurant.
There is more news but that can wait until it is more definative.

    Steve

Reading between the lines, we are not the only ones in recession. Is there much of an impact on Dalyan?

    regards

"Get well soon" to the tree, I often use the tea gardens when in Dalyan, it's a nice shaddy place to sit on the way back from the beach.

Yes the Turtle roundabout is finished and the funniest thing I saw was a group of turkish men gathered around it having tea delivered from the cay house.

Recession in Dalyan has been going on for a couple years, the main problem for shops, bars and restaurants is that if they have to rent the premises, the rent is often too high for the potential income also there are many other hidden costs and taxes.
There is not the passing trade of somewhere like Marmaris or Fethiye.

The other thing that has affected Dalyan in general is the changing habits of holiday makers. 4 or 5 years ago most Dalyaners had to stay in the hotels, there was no other option and it was relatively cheap to eat and drink out, don't forget local spirits used to cost ?2 a bottle now they they cost between ?8 and ?15 the same goes for wine, today most of the regulars now have their own villa or apartment and they will self cater most of the time. Villa and apartment rental is now the prefered way to holiday and they will self cater some of the time especialy now that the cost of living has gone up and going out for a meal and a few drinks can be expensive.

A lot of my friends on holiday will eat in and go for a few drinks or eat out and have some drinks when they get home. Fortunately, I have another group of friends who realy can't be bothered with cooking and washing up on holiday so they still go out to eat and drink.

As for the hotels, years ago very few offered anything other than snacks and a weekly bbq, now most of the better ones have there own dining room or area and offer half or even full board and some of them are very good.

Thanks for all the info Steve, as mentioned before, its fascinating to hear whats going on while we're stuck over here counting the days to the next trip. By the way, did the Tezcan Hotel open up yet, I keep trying the website, but no joy as of yet. You would think they would be getting it ready for the coming season. Its in a great location.

Keep up the good work. Also are there any new restaurants, restaurants closed, etc. We love to eat out every night while we're there. We do have our favourites and some not so favourite! but are up to trying new places. Info would be greatly appreciated.

Well guess what, it made me out to be a liar. The website is now up and running for the tezcan Hotel. www.tezcanhotel.com and boy does it look chic! No prices yet, but I bet they're high. Great location though and it sounds as though it has a great restaurant, so anyone who is lucky enough to eat or stay there, comments would be welcome. Steve, maybe you get a sneak peak and report back to us.

ha ha, I'm with you, with the music, will be interested to see what the prices are. I'm sure you will post with the results. It certainly is an improvement from what it was before, what an eyesore, they did a great job. Please let us know when you get a response.
