Default Turtle Research and recovery Centre - Iztuzu

There is a Turtle Research, Rehabilitation and Recovery Centre on Iztuzu Beach.

Injured turtles are looked after at the centre which is set back a couple of 100s mtrs from the beach. You can drive up and park there. It's open from 10am to 6pm.

There is currently a fairly large 4 yr old male loggerhead turtle, Efe (bless him!). He was injured by a fisherman and had a fish hook stuck in his mouth. He has had an operation and is recovering well. He will be released into the sea around September.

The centre is a good source of information and the students/researchers speak good English.

There is a lecture centre just behind the beach bar where documentaries are run daily at 12noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.

I have seen both the turtles, the other one is called June, I believe after Captain June but I did wonder what the white plastic nissan hut behind the bar was for, thanks Carla.

There were three turtles in the sick bay when we visited - one had a problem laying her eggs, I guess that the problem was sorted and she was released. When going to the beach by dolmus ask to get off just at the bottom of the hill and walk up behind the toilet block - only a few minutes (and it's in the shade). There weren't any signs or notices but just go in. Very informative students there to give you all the updates on the turtles.

Don't forget to put something in the box!

    :hmm:

Good call, my youngest lad will be thrilled. He had us marching up and down the beach in Cyprus hoping to catch a hatch. Apparently, we missed it by and hour and he has not let us forget it.

    regards

It was great to see the turtles close up, and the information is very good. We spoke to an American veterinary student who was going to be there for weeks.

I would go again when I get round to booking my next flights.

If anyone has news on when they have set up their web site I would appreciate further information.

Actualy " June " was the one that could not lay eggs and was very poorly, the better one of the 3 was released with lots of Official" recognition so maybe there is hope for the others. The "kids" from the university are all enthusiastic at the moment so we must all encourage them.
